carolina beach camping

Summer in North Carolina is hot. Thunderstorms are an almost daily occurrence, bringing torrential, soaking rain and providing temporary relief from the mugginess. I knew that NC had beaches, but I hadn't realized the amount of variety and how easy it can be to take a quick weekend escape from the Raleigh heat. I'm now a believer in the fact that beach camping is cheap and provides a perfect change of scenery when you don't wanna go too far.

Driving onto the beach, I suddenly realized the necessity of the 4-wheel drive vehicle. Get stuck, however, and you'll most likely be rescued immediately with a tow from a willing tattooed man with a wife-beater tan line.  There's a definite camaraderie between drivers of macho beach-ready vehicles, and helping a fellow man out of a tight spot is almost a source of pride. Park, pitch your tent and you're good to go.

The campfire is obviously a necessary part of the experience for most, both as a means to cook dinner and a source of light. But if you're too lazy, you can always wait for the pizza guy to drive by on his next round. How much easier could camping get?

Activities consist of... sunbathing, swimming, corn hole, drinking, towing people out, watching people get stuck/towed out, etc. There's something for everyone!

Final note: As Cameron can tell you, the tent pitching and packing up can be a process, so allow ample time. Happy beach camping, everyone!!
